Located in the northwest region of Chicagoland, McHenry County offers a change of pace from the urban environment. With easy access via I-90, the county is an exciting, diverse and beautiful region. Over 30 communities offer year-round recreational activities including hiking, biking and exploring over 20,000 acres of conservation land as well as all or part of 3 state parks and natural areas. Abundant water recreation is available on the Fox River as it winds its way through the eastern portion of the county. Family friendly attractions and events welcome visitors in all seasons and the arts abound throughout McHenry County.

Quaint downtown districts of our communities offer history and specialty shopping with vibrant main streets filled with antique shops, unique finds, distinctive fashions and a variety of dining. A diverse choice of lodging is available throughout the county from full service hotels to charming B&B's.

Where Are We Located?

McHenry County, Illinois is located approximately 50 miles northwest of Chicago with easy access from I-90. The Fox River Valley and Chain O' Lakes region borders to the east giving way to quaint villages and expansive rolling countryside to the west. The county is traversed by routes 20, 31, 47, 120, 173 and 176 making it a convenient escape from all parts of northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin.
