Did you hear? Tulips are coming back to McHenry County! Richardson Farm in Spring Grove is hosting their 2nd annual Tulip Festival. This is HUGE considering no one else in the Chicagoland area has done anything like this. Richardson Farm is no stranger to fun – every year they open their doors to their Fall Adventure Farm with the World’s Largest Corn Maze. During the winter, it’s cut-your-own- Christmas trees. They really know how to have fun and create lasting memories Richardson Farm’s Tulip Festival is no exception. Read all about our experience as well as tips to enjoy your visit. Enjoy!
Disclosure: A huge thanks to Naturally McHenry County and Richardson Adventure Farm for hosting my family and I. I was not required to express a particular point of view. I’m just super excited to share all my findings with you! All opinions are my own.
OUR EXPERIENCE AT RICHARDSON FARM’S TULIP FESTIVAL
We plugged in the address and easily found the farm. Tickets can be purchased online or at the farm. Look for the signs to the Tulip Festival. It is PAST the gift shop (red building). Look for the white tent and park on the grass/gravel.
Expect tons and tons of tulips – 300,000 tulips to be exact. They planted 10,000 bulbs each of 30 different varieties, so the maturity and colors will be varied. On our visit the tulips were just blooming and we saw plenty more ready to bloom. They are hoping to have the tulips last until Mother’s Day weekend and quite honestly I can’t think of a better present for Mothers!
They have the most adorable photo ops that highlight the beautiful tulips. Plus, who can resist climbing a vintage truck? Hey, they even have spots where adults can pose!
My kids were super excited to bring home their own tulip. The instructions seemed pretty simple, but it was a little challenging for their little hands. Maybe pack your own shears if you prefer?
Getting hungry? Food trucks will be serving food and there is plenty of picnic tables spaced apart. The gift shop also has a few snacks too. (If you’d prefer a sit-down meal read my recommendation for food at the neighboring town)
Next to the food area, you’ll find plenty of lawn games to keep everyone busy. Look for giant sized Jenga and Connect 4, bags, and more.
From the tulip parking area you can walk a half mile to the gift shop or you can drive. You can’t miss going to the gift shop where they have chocolate tulips from Anderson’s Candy Shop, just down in Richmond. At the gift shop, you can also find their yummy donuts, freshly popped popcorn in all different kinds of flavors, homemade fudge, and spring and garden merchandise.
Tulips and wine. Is there a better combination? Richardson’s Farm has wine tastings featuring wines from Prairie State Winery including Rhubarb, Honet Orange Blossom, Maria’s Sangarita, Honey Apple Crisp, Frontenac rose’, Kishwaukee Blue, Prairie Moscato, Prairie Dog and Recovery Noir.
Food Trucks will be available on certain days. They will also have a stand where you can find wine, beer and snacks. If you’re looking to have lunch or dinner before or after head to downtown Richmond just a few minutes away. For a great sit down restaurant with a great beer selection and seriously good comfort food head to Richmond Brathaus. Do NOT miss getting their giant pretzel. It comes with three different dipping sauces but the cheese dip has our heart. Other spots to check out include Richmond Cafe and Anderson’s Candy.
For up to date information, make sure to check out their Facebook page.
Visit on the weekends when they will have live music playing between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
You are welcome to bring your dog if it is on a leash and plays well with others!
Have young kids? I’d probably bring a wagon or heavy duty stroller. Just note that it may be muddy if it rains.
My family visited in the evening and thought the pictures turned out lovely!
Would I recommend a visit? Absolutely! I didn’t think my kids would have as much fun as I did, but they loved it! Plus, it made for the best memories!
